A truly striking Agave, its shape and contrasting foliage colours gives it this marginata variety fantastic architectural value.

Agave americana 'Marginata' is ideally suited to hot sunbaked planting areas in dry gardens, rock gardens or as a potted specimen.

The key with growing this variagated Agave is to find a planting environment that is very well drained, and in full-sun. So when planting out add additional grit or gravel to the planting hole to maximise drainage. To prevent the base of the Agave americana marginata sitting wet in winter, when planting try to raise it slightly above the surrounding area, so water runs from it rather than to it.

In the colder parts of the UK and in colder than usual winters try to keep the Agave americana as dry as possible and free from a build-up of snow.

We do recommend growing Agave americana in pots allowing the plant to be shifted into hot spots for the summer months and then moved to a sheltered spot undercover in winter.

When potted give the Agave americana marginata an occasional water through summer and feed 2-3 times. In winter keep the plant as dry as possible, while it is dormant.
