Water Meters

Whether you live alone in a flat or share a house, you can start saving serious money with a water meter and where possible, Cambridge Water will install it at no charge.

Why install a water meter?

There are two reasons why you should consider installing a water meter where you live: environmental and financial.

Environmental

We are encouraged to conserve natural resources and energy for the sake of our environment. People become more aware of their water use when they are metered as the more you use, the more you pay. The less water we take out from our surroundings, the less impact we have on our environment. The less water we need, the less chemicals are required in the treatment and the less energy is used in its distribution. There will also be less volume of sewage to treat as a result.

Financial

People feel that metering is the fairest way to charge for water– similar to gas and electricity, paying for what you use. And as a general rule, single occupants and couples or families living in large houses with high rateable values tend to save by having a water meter installed. Most customers use 10% less water once they have a meter installed just becasue they are conscious of what they use.

Environmental + Financial = Perfect Sense

Installing a water meter won’t cost you anything, but will make you more aware of how much water you use – and therefore save you money. Once our customers have a meter installed, most find their consumption drops by 10%. This is simply because they become more water conscious.

How to get a water meter

To apply for a water meter you can either contact Cambridge Water Customer Services on 01223 70 60 50, or alternatively complete our online application form.

In order to install a water meter, Cambridge Water first needs to carry out a survey to check there are no practical limitations and no unreasonable costs. (The company will not install a meter if it is technically impossible or if it would involve unreasonable expense). In these circumstances Cambridge Water will offer to charge the customer on the domestic assessed tariff.

We aim to install your meter within 90 days subject to no delays beyond Cambridge Water Company control (i.e. a delay in your acceptance of the survey results). This is in line with OFWAT guidance. If we fail to install the meter within the timescale, we do offer a
compensation payment as part of our customer charter.
